I had the enormous pleasure of seeing barrister James Mulcahy perform for 5 days at Southwark Crown Court in 1984 whilst I was training with Proctor Gillette Solicitors of Wimpole Street W1. One of our clients, who worked in a bank, was charged with multiple cheque fraud along with three other defendants and Solicitor Steven Barker was in charge of the case. Our client was found guilty - and rightly so - but James Mulcahy used his formidable debating skills in front of judge and jury to such effect, that I came to believe that our chap just might be found not guilty. Mulcahy was a genius. He found time to chat to me about his trips to Egypt and other things and I was glad to sit down with him for a good chat in his Chambers in Gray's Inn. I have kept his Times obituary for 30 years and here it is below.
